Make no mistake, 2016 was a banner year for solar. The world over experienced unprecedented solar growth in installs and technological advances. From Elon Musk’s unveiling of new solar tile technology to large-scale corporate installs, solar continues to make its mark on individuals and communities. 2017 promises to be an even better year, and Bay Area Solar Solutions LLC is excited for Floridians and the many benefits solar will continue to offer. With that being said, Bay Area Solar Solutions LLC takes a quick look back at solar’s banner year of 2016.
Florida Solar: We Win!
Perhaps the most impressive solar news involves our very own Sunshine State. In a recent blog, we noted how the state of Florida voted for solar power in the latest elections. With the passing of Amendment 4 in August and the defeat of Amendment 1 in November, Floridians made it clear that their choice was indeed solar. Many states watched as Floridians took to the polls and exhibited their power in favor of solar. Even the backing of $25 million from deceptive utilities could not sway the vote of Floridians.
Solar Installations Surpass 1 Million
Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) reported in May that the United States reached the milestone number of 1 million in solar system installations. Although this number was roughly 40 years in the making, industry experts predict the United States will hit the magical 2 million mark in 2 years. SEIA also reports that “1 million installations today generate enough electricity to power more than 5.5 million American homes” and “America will generate enough electricity to power 20 million homes by 2020.”
Although it may be some time before 2016’s final numbers are released (waiting for Q4 numbers primarily), according to SEIA, “through Q3 2016, the U.S. solar PV market has already surpassed its record total from 2015, driven by 14 states that installed more than 100 MWdc between Q1 and Q3 2016.” More statistics here.
Elon Musk’s Solar Roof
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, shook up the solar world with his unveiling of new solar roof technology. Although solar roofs are nothing new, Musk’s ambition and technology combination may just be what solar needs to explode into the stratosphere. The tiles are expected to be available later this year. Check out Musk and his latest innovation here.
Solar Finally Cheaper Than Fossil Fuels?!
The World Economic Forum (WEF) recently published a report stating the costs of renewable energy and fossil fuels. And the winner? Renewables! That’s right, the numbers of solar and wind are most certainly favorable against coal, natural gas, and oil.
“Renewable energy has reached a tipping point…It is not only a commercially viable option, but an outright compelling investment opportunity with long-term, stable, inflation-protected returns.”
—Michael Drexler, WEF
Many experts predict the continued drop in solar prices as opposed to rising costs of fossil fuels, especially in the United States.
Google To Go 100% Renewable
Google recently announced plans to go 100% renewable for 2017, per December report. The social media giant plans to make clean energy strides and influence other businesses and communities by going solar and clean energy. Companies such as Apple, Facebook, Ikea, and Target are a few that will follow suit. Google is used over 3.5 billion times per day in searches, and its impact cannot be understated.
With record breaking installs and ever-improving technology, solar continues to win in Florida. Trendsetters such as Google and Elon Musk continue to promote solar and its benefits. Combined with the solar federal investment tax credits (ITC), the aforementioned highlights are sure to push 2017 past 2016’s record-breaking year globally, nationally, and in Florida. Yes, Floridians, 2016 was an amazing year for solar; now let’s live up to our “Sunshine State” name by having an even better 2017!
